Description

A quick and easy traditional Irish bread that requires no yeast, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1.75 cups cold buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp melted butter (optional, for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly flour a baking sheet or a cast-iron skillet.
  2. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl until well combined.
  3. Create a well in the center of your dry mixture and pour in the cold buttermilk.
  4. Gently stir using a fork or your hands until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round loaf about 1.5 inches thick.
  6. Transfer the shaped loaf onto the prepared baking sheet and cut a deep ½-inch ‘X’ into the top of the loaf.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Optionally, brush with melted butter after baking.
  9. Wrap the bread in a tea towel for about 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Serve warm or at room temperature. Pairs well with soups, stews, butter, honey, or jam.
