A quick and easy traditional Irish bread that requires no yeast, perfect for any meal.
Ingredients

- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1.75 cups cold buttermilk
- 1 tbsp melted butter (optional, for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly flour a baking sheet or a cast-iron skillet.
- Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl until well combined.
- Create a well in the center of your dry mixture and pour in the cold buttermilk.
- Gently stir using a fork or your hands until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round loaf about 1.5 inches thick.
- Transfer the shaped loaf onto the prepared baking sheet and cut a deep ½-inch ‘X’ into the top of the loaf.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Optionally, brush with melted butter after baking.
- Wrap the bread in a tea towel for about 10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Serve warm or at room temperature. Pairs well with soups, stews, butter, honey, or jam.
