Description
These homemade Black Bean Burgers are hearty, flavorful, and packed with protein — a delicious and healthy alternative to traditional beef burgers. Perfect for weeknight dinners or summer BBQs, they’re crispy on the outside and tender inside.
Ingredients
1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup grated carrot
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp smoked paprika
1 flax egg (1 tbsp flaxseed meal + 3 tbsp water)
Salt and black pepper, to taste
2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
4 burger buns
Toppings: avocado, lettuce, tomato, red onion, vegan mayo or aioli
Instructions
1. In a small bowl, mix flaxseed meal and water to make a flax egg. Let sit for 5 minutes to thicken.
2. In a large bowl, mash black beans with a fork or potato masher, leaving some chunks for texture.
3. Add breadcrumbs, onion, carrot, garlic, soy sauce, chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, pepper, and the flax egg.
4. Mix until well combined; if too wet, add more breadcrumbs.
5. Form into 4 patties and refrigerate for 15–20 minutes to firm up.
6. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
7. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side, until crisp and browned.
8. Serve on burger buns with your favorite toppings.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and buns.
You can bake the patties at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes, flipping halfway.
Add corn, chopped peppers, or a splash of hot sauce for extra flavor.
