Enjoy crispy, flavorful mini blooming onions made healthier with an air fryer.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup Buttermilk (or milk mixed with lemon juice for a quick option)
- 1 cup Flour (substitute with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option)
- 1 tbsp Paprika (consider using smoked paprika for extra flavor)
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tsp Onion Powder
- 0.5 tsp Cayenne Pepper (adjust according to taste)
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Pepper
- 2 medium Sweet Onions (like Vidalia)
- As needed Cooking Spray/Oil (for crispy exterior)
Instructions
- Prepare the onions by carefully cutting them into blooming shapes, keeping the root intact.
- Soak the onion slices in buttermilk for at least 10 minutes to tenderize them.
- Make the coating by whisking together flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
- Coat the onions in the seasoned flour mixture after soaking.
- Prepare your air fryer by setting it to 375°F and allowing it to heat up.
- Apply cooking spray on the coated onions for a crispy finish.
- Air Fry the onions in a single layer for about 12 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.
- Serve immediately while warm, with your choice of dipping sauces.
Notes
For the best results, don’t overcrowd the air fryer for even cooking. For leftovers, re-crisp in the air fryer for a few minutes.
