- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 1 cup currants
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking sheet.
- Combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
- Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
- Pour the buttermilk into the well and stir until the dough comes together.
- Fold in the currants evenly into the dough.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently for about a minute.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf.
- Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet and cut a cross on the top.
- Bake for about 30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Transfer to a wire rack to cool before slicing.
Notes
Store in a bread box or wrap in plastic wrap at room temperature for up to three days. For long-term storage, freeze wrapped tightly.
