A comforting side dish featuring thinly sliced potatoes layered with creamy sauce and cheese, cooked in a cast iron skillet for a golden crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or Gruyère)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Layer half of the sliced potatoes on the bottom of the skillet.
  5. Season the first layer of potatoes with salt and pepper.
  6. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese on top of the potatoes.
  7. Pour half of the heavy cream over the layers.
  8. Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, cheese, and cream.
  9. Cover the skillet with aluminum foil and place it in the oven. Bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until the potatoes are golden and bubbly.
  11. Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley before serving.

Notes

Let the dish sit for about 10 minutes before serving to help the layers set.
