- 1 pound ground breakfast sausage (cooked and crumbled)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (regular or gluten-free)
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup or sugar
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese (grated)
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted and cooled)
- Additional cheese (for topping, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned and crumbled, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess grease.
- Mix the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and maple syrup in a large bowl.
- Add the cooked sausage and grated cheddar cheese to the flour mixture.
- Whisk together the milk, egg, and remaining maple syrup in a separate bowl.
- Combine the milk mixture with the flour mixture, followed by the melted butter. Stir until just combined.
- Fill each muffin tin with batter, topping with additional cheese if desired.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
- Cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- Serve warm with sides like fresh fruit or yogurt.
Notes
Store muffins at room temperature for 1-2 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. Freezing is also an option for longer storage.
